World Sketchnote Day 2017

1/11/2017

It's World Sketchnote Day, so it's time to post some sketchnotes!

I found these old unpublished sketchnotes from two different events I attended in 2014, and never really finished.

This first one was from a talk by Canadian comics creator Michael Cho, at Loft 112. Calgary comics guy Damian Willcox invited me to come out for this!

And the second set of sketchnotes comes from a reading at Shelf Life Books, by my mom, who had a little launch for her self-published book of poems, "Naked Under my Coat: Writing Under the Influence of Parkinson's."

And last of all - found at the bottom of my pile of "things I drew in 2014 and didn't do anything with" - some notes that aren't exactly sketchnotes, but notes about the kind of lettering I use when making sketchnotes!

Happy sketchnoting!

TEDSummit 2016 Sketchnotes

I was fortunate to have been invited to do some graphic recording at a workshop that was happening at the Banff Centre recently. That would have been good enough on its own, since it's a venue that really can't be beat. But, even better, this particular event was part of the 2016 TED Summit. Here are some sketchnotes I drew right after my day in Banff. My experience was just a little taste of the amazing things going on during the whole summit, but definitely a delicious one!

It was a pleasure to work with the amazing folks from TED, BMW i and the Banff Centre, who made it so easy for me show up and do my thing.

And thanks to TEDx Kyoto organizer Takayuki Mitsugi for the green tea KitKat!

Here are my notes from the session I worked at:

Sketchnotes from Calgary Expo 2015

I took some notes during Stephanie Chan's panel on "Women Into Comics." It was a pretty engaged audience... and the discussion took a whole bunch of unexpected turns.

It was great to hear from Stephanie, as well as other panels Brittney Leblanc, Mary Arroz, Kara Swanson and Erin Millar. Hope this isn't too small to read! The whole image is here, followed by some closer-ups which I hope are not too small to read.

Sketchnotes from a talk by the Minister for the Status of Women

12/23/2014

Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister for the Status of Women, was in Calgary yesterday and I was fortunate enough to get to listen in on her conversation with some local business leaders. What a great opportunity to hear about ways in which Canadian women entrepreneurs (like... yours truly) can be provided with the resources they need. So of course I took notes.

It is a bit hard to make out the details in the image, so here's an experiment - I made the image into a "Prezi," which converts it into a format that allows you to zoom in really close. I've seen this technology before (and was interested to discover it comes from Hungary!), but this is my first attempt at using it. Let me know if this works (in case it doesn't, a plain old-fashioned version of the picture follows). It certainly seems like this would be handy when it comes to viewing complicated text-heavy graphic recording images just like the ones I'm always drawing!

I am a graphic recorder based in Calgary. I like local stories. I write comics when I have free time. And I leave eraser shavings everywhere I go.

    my website

www.the23rdstory.com started as a blog and now includes some information about my graphic recording practice as well.

I also have an (old) website which features a lot of my (old) work. Look out, it's a bit clunky and there are a lot of links that don't go anywhere, but there are still a few interesting things there:

Some nice things people said about my work:

“If Breitkreuz and Foong [founders of the Calgary Comics & Entertainment Expo] represent the Type-A side of Calgary's self-publishing community, Hester may be the community's right brain.” – Tom Babin, FFWD Magazine

“…A strong graphic style similar to other autobiographically-inclined Canadian cartoonists like Chester Brown and Julie Doucet.” – Gilbert Bouchard, Edmonton Journal
